Exploring Hidden History

Some history makes the textbooks. Most of it doesn’t. Those are the ones worth telling.

One Shot at History is a podcast and historical archive built on years of original research by Carl Reinemann, a local historian, writer, and public speaker based in Horicon, Wisconsin. From Cold War secrets buried in the Wisconsin pines to forgotten crimes, Indigenous oral tradition, and the quiet history of small American communities, this is where the overlooked gets its due.

Because the past only happens once — and the research never really stops. Dig in.

One Shot at History is a growing archive of original research, historical writing, and podcast episodes by Carl Reinemann — pulling forgotten stories from old newspapers, court records, and archival collections. It’s rooted in Horicon and Dodge County, but the stories reach well beyond: pioneers and Ho-Chunk homelands, the Civil War and the American Revolution, small-town crime, Cold War secrets, and folklore. Because the past only happens once.

Meet the Author

Carl Reinemann has spent a lot of time in archives that most people don’t know exist, reading newspapers that nobody has touched in a century, and asking questions about people who were almost completely forgotten. One Shot at History is what happens when that kind of obsession meets a microphone.

Based in Horicon, Wisconsin, Carl is a local historian, author, podcast host, and public speaker who brings forgotten local and regional stories back to life — drawing from archival research, old newspaper columns, and a genuine love for the history that shaped ordinary communities. Whether he’s behind the microphone, in the archives, or standing in front of an audience, Carl’s mission is the same: make history accessible, engaging, and worth remembering. Because the past only happens once.
