How to read this. Shading shows the percent of each town's residents born in the selected place. Cities are combined with the surrounding town because the census records do not separate them (Horicon with Hubbard, Mayville with Williamstown, Juneau with Oak Grove, and so on). German states are recorded only from 1870. "Including children" adds Wisconsin-born children whose father was born in that place (1880 only). Gray means no data: Fox Lake, Westford and the city wards were not yet separate in 1850. 1860 is omitted because that census recorded post offices, not towns.
Sources. Town counts computed from IPUMS USA full-count census data (Steven Ruggles et al., IPUMS USA, Minneapolis, MN: IPUMS, usa.ipums.org) with town assignments from the Census Place Project (Berkes, Karger & Nencka, openICPSR 179401). Only town totals are shown. Map by Carl Reinemann, One Shot at History.
